A Thing of the Past

Joshua June 23rd, 2008

VetiverI began listening to Thing of the Past thinking Vetiver had lightened up. The album is lush and open with a certain California sunny-ness that previous Vetiver albums have not had.

Turns out, Thing of the Past is a collection of covers by little known or perhaps forgotten songwriters from the early 70’s.

Some may recognize a few names, such as “Standin” by Townes (god) Van Zandt or “The Swimming Song” by Loudon Wainwright III. Others such as “Hook & Ladder” written by Norman Greenbaum and “Blue Driver” by Michael Hurley are excellently obscure hits.

There is nothing like being introduced to new and inspiring music. On A Thing of the Past, Vetiver gives us twelve new branches to explore. To thank them, I think it would be wise to pick up the album.
